Women’s football is set to turn profressional with a planned Ladies’ Super League to be televised from spring 2011.

Players are not paid under the current system, which sees top performers at clubs such as Liverpool Ladies earn maximum win bonuses of a meagre £30 a match.

Kelly Simmons, head of National Game at the FA, warned that professionalism will not mean a sea-change in the women’s game.

"We don't think we'll see all players full time straight away," she told Sky. "Some will be part time.

"We've developed a three-year strategy for women's football... we've already put England players on central contracts so that we can basically buy them out of work so they can train more."

While it is described as professional, in practice the sport will be semi-pro with at least four members of each club reportedly set for annual salaries of over £20,000 apiece.

Liverpool is one of eight clubs chosen to make up the inaugural Super League, the others being Arsenal, Birmingham City, Bristol Academy, Chelsea, Doncaster Rovers Belles, Everton and Lincoln.

Liverpool boss Robbie Johnson believes that the innovation could signal an influx of females into the sport – and hence improve the quality of the top level of the game.

"If it raises the profile to younger girls and women and they want to come into the game, that will hopefully increase the players available to be selected and increase the standards," he said.

The season will begin in March of next year, with matches televised on ESPN.

The FA, which will run the competition, hopes that top players will no longer be lured abroad to lucrative leagues such as that in the United States. Eurosport -Yahoo Sport

AP – Tsunami survivors weep on the tsunami-ravaged Pagai island, in Mentawai Islands, Indonesia, Thursday

 MENTAWAI ISLANDS, Indonesia – The fisherman was jolted awake by the powerful earthquake and ran with his screaming neighbors to high ground. He said they watched as the sea first receded and then came roaring back "like a big wall" that swept away their entire village.

"Suddenly trees, houses and all things in the village were sucked into the sea and nothing was left," Joni Sageru recalled Thursday in one of the first survivor accounts of this week's tsunami that slammed into islands off western Indonesia.

The death toll rose to 370 as officials found more bodies, although hundreds of people remained missing. Harmensyah, head of the West Sumatra provincial disaster management center, said rescue teams "believe many, many of the bodies were swept to sea."

Along with the 33 people killed by a volcano that erupted Tuesday more than 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) to the east in central Java, the number of dead from the twin disasters has now topped 400. Mount Merapi began rumbling again Thursday after a lull that allowed mourners to hold a mass burial for its victims. There were no reports of new injuries or damage.

The catastrophes struck within 24 hours in different parts of the seismically active country, severely testing Indonesia's emergency response network.

Aid workers trickling into the remote region found giant chunks of coral and rocks in places where homes once stood. Huge swaths of land were submerged. Swollen corpses dotted roads and beaches.


In a rare bright spot, an 18-month-old baby was found alive Wednesday in a clump of trees on Pagai Selatan — the same island where the 30-year-old Sageru lived. Relief coordinator Harmensyah said a 10-year-old boy found the toddler whose parents are both dead.

More than 100 survivors crowded a makeshift medical center in the main town of Sikakap on Pagai Utara — one of the four main islands in the Mentawai chain located between Sumatra and the Indian Ocean.

Some still wept for lost loved ones as they lay on straw mats or sat on the floor, waiting for medics to treat injuries such as cuts and broken limbs. Outside, some rescuers wore face masks as they wrapped corpses in black body bags.

A young woman named Adek sobbed uncontrollably as she tried to talk about her year-old baby who was washed away. "Oh, don't ask me again," she said, wiping her tears and turning away.

One of the hardest hit areas with 65 dead was the village of Pro Rogat, on Pagai Seatandug island.

Villagers there huddled under tarps in the rain and told how many people who had fled to the hills were now too afraid to return home.

Mud and palm fronds covered the body of the village's 60-year-old pastor, Simorangkir. He lay on the ground, partially zipped into a body bag. Police and relatives took turns pushing a shovel into the sodden dirt next to him for his grave.

 
His 28-year-old grandson, Rio, traveled by boat to Pro Rogat from his home on a nearby island to check on his relatives after the quake and tsunami. He said he was picking through the wreckage when someone cried out that he had found a body.

Rio walked over and saw his dead grandfather partially buried under several toppled palm trees.

"Everybody here is so sad," Rio said, as relatives prepared to lay his grandfather in the grave.

Officials say a multimillion-dollar tsunami warning system that uses buoys to detect sudden changes in water levels broke down a month ago because it was not being properly maintained. The system was installed after a monster 2004 quake and tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.

A German official at the project disputed there was a breakdown, saying Monday's 7.7-magnitude quake's epicenter was too close to the Mentawai islands for residents to get the warning before the killer wave hit.

"The early warning system worked very well — it can be verified," said Joern Lauterjung, head of the German-Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning Project for the Potsdam-based GeoForschungs Zentrum. He added that only one sensor of 300 had not been working and said that had no effect on the system's operation.

At the Mount Merapi volcano, hot clouds of ash spewed from the mountain around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Indonesian volcanology agency Subandriyo.

It was unclear whether the new activity was a sign of another major blast to come.

Residents from Kinahrejo, Ngrangkah, and Kaliadem — villages that were devastated in Tuesday's blast — crammed into refugee camps. Officials brought cows, buffalo and goats down the mountain so that villagers wouldn't try to go home to check on their livestock.

Thousands attended a mass burial for 26 of the victims six miles (10 kilometers) from the base of the volcano. MENTAWAI ISLANDS, Indonesia Oct 27 — Helicopters with emergency supplies finally landed Wednesday on the remote Indonesian islands slammed by a tsunami that killed at least 272 people, while elsewhere in the archipelago the toll from a volcanic eruption rose to 30, including the mountain’s spiritual caretaker.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono cut short a state visit to Vietnam to rush home to deal with the dual disasters that struck Indonesia within 24 hours, straining the country’s ability to respond.

The first aerial surveys of the region hit by the 10-foot (three-meter) tsunami revealed huge swaths of land underwater and the crumbled rubble of homes torn apart by the wave. One house lay tilted, resting on the edge of its red roof, with tires and slabs of concrete piled up on the surrounding sand.

Two days after an undersea earthquake spawned the killer wave, the casualty count was still rising as rescuers landed for the first time on the Mentawai island chain, which was closest to the epicenter and the worst hit. Bad weather had kept them away previously.

The first cargo plane loaded with 16 tons of tents, medicine, food and clothes arrived Wednesday afternoon, said disaster official Ade Edward. Four helicopters also landed in Sikakap, a town on North Pagai island, which will be the center of relief operations. - AP

BERLIN, Oct 26, 2010 (AFP) - Paul the octopus, who shot to fame during this year’s football World Cup in South Africa for his flawless record in predicting game outcomes, has died, his aquarium in Germany said Tuesday.

“Management and staff at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre were devastated to discover that oracle octopus Paul, who achieved global renown during the recent World Cup, had passed away overnight,” the aquarium said in a sombre statement.

“Paul amazed the world by correctly predicting the winners of all Germany’s World Cup clashes, and then of the final,” said Sea Life manager Stefan Porwoll.

“His success made him almost a bigger story than the World Cup itself ... We had all naturally grown very fond of him and he will be sorely missed,” said Porwoll.

Paul beat the odds during the World Cup by correctly forecasting all eight games he was asked to predict, including Spain’s 1-0 win over the Netherlands in the final.

For the prediction, two boxes were lowered into the salty soothsayer’s tank, each containing a mussel and a flag of the two opposing teams.

Watched by a myriad of reporters, Paul would head to one box, wrench open the lid and gobble the tasty morsel, with the box he plumped for being deemed the likely winner.

Paul’s body is now in cold storage while the aquarium decides “how best to mark his passing.”

However, Paul’s fans need not despair. The aquarium has already been grooming a successor, to be named Paul like his mentor.

“We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine,” said Porwoll.

“While this may seem a curious thing to do for a sea creature, Paul achieved such popularity during his short life that it may be deemed the most appropriate course of action.” - AFP

El Smart ForTwo es uno de esos autos que han calado hondo en los mercados en los que ya ha sido presentado y la aceptación (y en muchos casos, el furor) que ha despertado entre los usuarios ha llegado a niveles sorprendentes. Pero no vayan ustedes a creer que la gente va a aceptar cualquier cosa… no señor.



Pues bien, esto mismo parece que han creído desde la marca cuando aceptaron mostrar al modelo con los nuevos vinilos oficiales con la imagen de Hello Kitty, la gatita japonesa más naif e incombinable con un auto del planeta.

Vaya uno a saber qué cosa se les habrá cruzado por la cabeza (si es que no la han perdido…) en el instante de crear semejante baratija adherida irrespetuosamente sobre la superficie de un auto que está como para prestarle debida atención y merecido respeto.

Habrá llegado la hora, a la luz de los hechos, de avisarles a quienes han sido los responsables de semejante atrocidad que las niñas de 10 años de edad no están habilitadas para conducir automóviles (a menos que las cosas hayan cambiado tanto y nosotros no estemos advertidos…) y que por lo tanto será francamente complicado encontrar público dispuesto a comprarse un auto maravilloso con una decoración sencillamente impresentable (o casi).

Esta auténtica baratija que se puede plotear sobre las formas de un Smart ForTwo se puede adquirir en los Estados Unidos de América merced al acuerdo entre la marca y Sanrio, la empresa encargada de la creación y generación de todos y cada uno de los ítems con la figura de Kitty. El razonamiento (si es que lo podemos llamar así) que han seguido para darle rienda suelta a ésto que vemos en la foto de la nota, es el de lograr que los usuarios del auto “adquieran el estilo de vida de Hello Kitty” (¿?), allá ellos… yo, paso… y cada uno de ustedes, sabrá lo que hace.

Si lo aceptan, aquí va un sano consejo que bien puede ser tomado como de un amigo: de Hello Kitty compren lo quieran… llaveritos, bolsos para las nenas, carpetas para el colegio, cartucheras, bolígrafos y hasta incluso sábanas para las camas de los niños… pero nunca, nunca, nunca se atrevan a adquirir estos impresentables vinilos que les estamos mostrando. / Coches 20

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia Oct 25 — Indonesia warned Monday that its most volatile volcano could erupt at any time, prompting calls for the evacuation of thousands of villagers living on the mountain’s slopes.

Mount Merapi has seen increased volcanic activity over the past week and officials have raised the alert level for the 9,737-foot (2,968-meter) -high mountain to the most urgent level, said government volcanologist Surono, who uses only one name.

The mountain last erupted in 2006, when it sent an avalanche of blistering gases and rock fragments racing down the mountain that killed two people. A similar eruption in 1994 killed 60 people, while 1,300 people died in an eruption in 1930.

“Officials have predicted that if it erupts, magma would flow to the southern side,” said Sri Purnomo, the head of Sleman district on Java island, where Mount Merapi is located.
He said officials were warning some 11,400 villagers living on the mountain’s southern slope to prepare for “urgent evacuation.” About 40,000 people live close to the mountain.

Purnomo said camps to take in the evacuees were being set up at government buildings and sports fields more than six miles (10 kilometers) away.

Villagers in the past have been reluctant to leave their homes and crops, and witnesses said many were still seen tending their fields and feeding their cows on Monday.

There are 129 active volcanoes to watch in Indonesia, which is spread across 17,500 islands and is prone to eruptions and earthquakes because of its location within the so-called “Ring of Fire” — a series of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia.- AFP (Utusan Malaysia Online)

After exfoliating, pat your skin until it’s almost dry, then massage a small amount of oil all over your body. Result? Skin like velvet. After your hair is dry, massage a few drops of oil in your palms and, bending over, scrunch a bit of it into the ends.

Who knew that honey is equally effective for treating colds and improving your looks? Applying honey all over your face is beneficial, since it contains vitamins and moisturizes. It's also a natural antibiotic that can kill bacteria. Add a little white sugar and exfoliate with it in the shower, too.


Lemon Juice:

There are so many things you can do with lemon juice (preferably freshly squeezed). Soak your nails in them (without polish) to reduce yellowing, and brush your teeth with a mixture of baking soda and lemon juice for whiter teeth. And best of all, take a tablespoon or two of freshly squeezed lemon juice and mix into a tall glass of warm water. Drink it before ingesting anything else, first thing in the morning. It’s a great way to hydrate and jump-start your system.


Crisco (or some other vegetable shortening):

Crisco is a surprisingly effective makeup remover, and it’s also highly effective in treating eczema. Apply the shortening to infected areas, and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse, and apply a little olive oil.


Yogurt:

Yogurt is a highly effective treatment for the common skin condition rosacea. It has the ability to soften the skin while calming the redness — especially after eating something spicy or enjoying a little too much heart-healthy red wine. Simply apply it as a mask, and leave on for about 15 minutes. Rinse, and apply a light layer of olive oil.


Parsley and Mint:

Bad breath is common, and usually avoidable. Steer clear of the store-bought mouth rinses and gargles, as they tend to make matters worse. Simply brush your tongue when you brush your teeth, drink lots of water to keep your mouth hydrated and chew on a few sprigs of parsley or mint, since studies have shown that these freshen breath instantly. Keep a plastic bag filled with the sprigs in your purse at all times.

Green Tea Bags:

Green tea is one of the best things you can drink (along with lots of water, and red wine in moderation). For a great de-puffing eye treatment, try soaking a few bags in water and sticking them in the freezer. Place on your eyes, lower the lights and ... relax.


Apple Cider Vinegar:

Exfoliating is one of the best things we can do for our skin. Chemical peels done at your dermatologist's office are highly effective, though often expensive. But a simple application of apple cider vinegar works, too. Soak a cotton ball in it and apply all over the face, keeping away from the eyes; leave on for at least 45 minutes. MELBOURNE: Australia is singing the praises of the Malaysian police.

The professionalism of the force is now the toast of the Australian authorities after it routed a major people-smuggling ring which targeted Australia-bound Afghan asylum-seekers.

The Perth-based West Australian newspaper said seven immigration officials working at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport were arrested last week as part of a sting which followed a joint Australian-Malaysian investigation of the people-smuggling syndicate.

Following a tip-off from the Australian authorities, the Malaysian police uncovered a sophisticated operation involving an international network of corrupt officials in three countries.

The police also unearthed a 'recycling' of fake Pakistani passports.

The newspaper said asylum-seekers from Afghanistan would pay up to A$10,000 to people smugglers based in Karachi, Pakistan and were given false passports for their flight to Kuala Lumpur, where they would be instructed to go to a particular line in the immigration queue.

Once their passports were stamped by an official, they would be met by a member of the crime syndicate who would then confiscate their passports, take them to a safe house where they would pay about A$3,000 for passage to Australia on a boat through the Malacca Straits.

The report said some Afghans were flown from Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta where corrupt officials helped them clear immigration and customs. They were also taken to safe houses to wait for their boat to Christmas Island.

Passports used by the asylum seekers were returned to Karachi for the next paying customers.

The syndicate's methods were pieced together by Australian analysts who found similarities in the stories of hundreds of asylum seekers during interviews with immigration officials on Christmas Island.

Of those arrested by Malaysian police last week, one was a deputy assistant director of the country's immigration department. Two others were a Pakistani and Indonesian.

A senior official in Canberra said Australian authorities were impressed by the Malaysian police professionalism and effectiveness.

The West Australian newspaper was told a "significant number" of the thousands of Afghan asylum seekers to have arrived on boats this year, used the crime syndicate.

Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the syndicate was also linked to terrorist activities, drug and firearm smuggling and espionage.

A record 107 boats have arrived this year, carrying 5,088 asylum seekers, 2,557 of whom are from Afghanistan.

The next biggest country of origin is Iran (753), followed by Iraq (571) and Sri Lanka (393). - BERNAMA (NST Online)

A woman died after becoming trapped underneath her car while attempting to defrost it, police said.

Andrea Southern was crushed under her Fiat Panda parked outside the detached home she shared with her husband John and two daughters.

The bizarre accident happened in Whickham Close, Widnes, Cheshire, at around 7am on Wednesday.

It is believed she was stuck for 30 minutes before being spotted by a neighbour who called an ambulance.

Mrs Southern, who was believed to be in her 30s, was taken to Whiston Hospital with serious injuries but died after 4.30pm.

Her husband is said to be too upset to talk and was being comforted by family and friends.

Mrs Southern's black Fiat Panda had been parked on the sloping driveway in front of the house but had since been removed for examination.

Joiner Ryan Gregson, 21, who lives across the road, witnessed paramedics battling to save Mrs Southern. He said: "It's an utter tragedy. She was a lovely woman, quite quiet and they had two young daughters."

Cheshire Police said: "Inquiries suggest she was defrosting her car when it is thought to have started and rolled backwards, dragging her under the front wheels. Police believe she was trapped for around half an hour before her neighbour found her."

"Police are appealing to anyone who was in the Whickham Close area of Widnes yesterday morning between around 6.15am and 7am to make contact with the officer investigating the incident, even if you feel you have seen nothing of relevance. This may help police piece together the sequence of events resulting in the woman's tragic death."-Yahoo! News

Vitamin D is not a vitamin at all but is actually a steroid hormone. These fat-soluble signal molecules are able to enter the cell and turn the genes on or off. These genes include those that regulate the absorption of calcium from the intestines, the building of strong bones, and the efficient and coordinated activity of our immune systems.


New research has found this amazing “vitamin” plays an even stronger role in the prevention of disease, including heart disease, respiratory illnesses, diabetes, depression, autoimmune diseases, and at least 17 different types of cancer.
In the Framingham Heart Study, it was observed that men with higher levels of vitamin D were less likely to suffer a heart attack. Higher levels of vitamin D are also associated with a lower likelihood of developing breast and colon cancer.

The standard American diet (SAD) contains very little vitamin D. Eight ounces of cow’s milk, which does not naturally contain vitamin D, is fortified with approximately 100 units (IU) of vitamin D. This falls far short of the current RDA of 2,000 IU for Adults and 400 to 800 I.U. for children. To get there with fortified milk you would have to drink 20 glasses a day!

The best way to get vitamin D is through exposure to the sun. The sun’s ultraviolet rays convert inactive vitamin D that is stored in our skin to its active form -- vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol. Just 10 to 20 minutes of summertime sun will trigger the production of about 10,000 to 20,000 IU of vitamin D in the body.

Over the last two decades there has been an emphasis on avoiding the sun because of a concern for skin cancer. Our increasingly sedentary indoor lifestyle, fear of skin cancer and subsequent use of sunscreen have all contributed to the current epidemic of vitamin D deficiency.

A recent study confirms that Americans are not getting enough Vitamin D.1 The data showed that 75 percent of children and adults in the US fall below acceptable vitamin D levels.

The recommended daily sun exposure without sunscreen is about 15 minutes for light-skinned individuals and 30 minutes for darker skin. For healthy adults and adolescents who avoid the sun during winter months, as well, I would recommend 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily.

When supplementing Vitamin D, don’t forget its cofactors, the necessary nutrients the body needs to utilize vitamin D properly. These include: magnesium, zinc, vitamin K2, boron, and small amounts of vitamin A.2 The most important of these is magnesium, as supplementing vitamin D can unmask an underlying magnesium deficiency.

So go outside, get safe sun exposure, use sunscreen as directed and ask your doctor to check your vitamin D levels!

KUALA LUMPUR: Six women claimed they were forced to resign from their jobs just because they were pregnant.

Claiming they were treated unfairly, they then approached the MCA public services and complaints bureau for advice.

Bureau head Datuk Michael Chong said the six women were all from different private companies, who got pregnant while working for the companies.

He said two of the women were sacked immediately as they were still under probation while the other four were bullied into leaving their well-paying jobs.

Chong said upon realising their employees were pregnant, most of the employers had picked on the women by either giving them difficult jobs, or none at all, resulting in the women getting frustrated and stressed at work.

"When I talked to the employers, some even told me they would not have hired the women if they knew they were going to get pregnant."

He added that all the cases had been referred to the Industrial Court and the Labour Department.

Most of the women had already been compensated for their grievances.

Chong said it was unfair for these women to be discriminated against because they became pregnant.

He appealed to employers, especially those from the private sector, to treat women well and fairly and not resort to dirty tactics to force them to leave the company.

One of the women, who did not want to be identified, said she had been employed as a software engineer at an information technology company for five years when she became pregnant in April.

In August, the employer told the 29-year-old to leave the company, claiming the company was not doing well and he could not afford to pay her salary. She was given a choice of leaving with three months' salary as compensation or stay on with a 50 per cent pay cut.

Last month, her employer threatened to withdraw the salary compensation if she did not accept it immediately. She then took the cheque and left the company but maintained she was the only employee to be treated in such a way.

"I was the only employee in the history of the company to ever get pregnant," she claimed.

She advised women seeking jobs to understand their future companies' policies regarding their rights and benefits before accepting employment.

KOTA BARU: Parents and guardians have been reminded not to take baby speech problem lightly as it may be an early sign of deafness.


Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital (HRPZ II) director Datuk Dr Gahazali Hasni Md Hassan, said most parents might think that it is normal for babies to speak late but not all are lucky.

"Attention must be given to babies with speech problem. One year-old babies can make sounds although unclear.

"It may be too late to help 3 year-old children who can't speak as they can become deaf and dumb from not hearing people speak and communicate," he told Bernama today.

Dr Ghazali said babies who speak late should be taken to hospital for examination to determine whether they have hearing problem.

"Parents should be more sensitive to the problem as 4 or 5 year-old children are deemed critical for treatment and will not benefit from hearing aid."

He said the people could have ear examination and treatment including cochlear transplant at HRPZ II with the RM70,000 cost borne by the government.

HRPZ II had, since 2009, helped eight deaf children to live a normal life and is looking for more children to treat under the programme.-Bernama 18 Oct 2010

LUMUT, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- Some 87,000 people in Malaysia were identified to have been infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), with the average rate of 10 people being infected daily, said Malaysian AIDS Council president Datuk Mohd Zaman Khan.


"The increase in the number of HIV-infected people in the country is very worrying and should be given proper attention.

"Since the first HIV case was reported in 1986, Malaysia was said to have striven to check the spread of the deadly disease (AIDS) but to no avail," he told Bernama after the opening of a seminar and exhibition on HIV/AIDS and Islamic Forum at the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) base, here, today.

He said only in the past few years, had efforts to combat HIV infection in the country shown some positive results.

Mohd Zaman said public perception of people living with HIV/AIDS, however, was still worrying to the extent of causing the HIV carriers to be afraid to coming forward to seek treatment.

"I believe public awareness and concern about HIV/AIDS are key to preventing infection and reducing the casualties," he added.-- BERNAMA

We all know that diet plays a big part in our health, but reports in the press can sometimes be confusing and even contradictory. This month there have been some interesting reports of the links between certain foods and cancer - either to increase the risk or help prevent it.


So here is a handy round-up covering meat, vegetables and bread crust!
Vegetarians at less risk than meat eaters for many cancers

Earlier this month the British Journal of Cancer reported that vegetarians are 12% less likely to develop cancer than meat eaters. In a study of more than 61,000 people scientists from Oxford followed meat eaters and vegetarians for over 12 years, during which 3,350 of the participants were diagnosed with cancer.

They found that the risk of being diagnosed with cancers of the stomach, bladder and blood was lower in vegetarians than in meat eaters.

The most striking difference was in cancers of the blood including leukaemia, multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The risk of these diseases was 45% lower in vegetarians than in meat eaters.

The study looked at 20 different types of cancers. The differences in risks between vegetarians and meat eaters were independent of other lifestyle behaviours including smoking, alcohol intake and obesity, which also affect the chance of developing cancer.

Sara Hiom, director of health information at Cancer Research UK, said: "These interesting results add to the evidence that what we eat affects our chances of developing cancer. We know that eating a lot of red and processed meat increases the risk of stomach cancer. But the links between diet and cancer risk are complex and more research is needed to see how big a part diet plays and which specific dietary factors are most important.

Meat eaters at increased risk of pancreatic cancer


In more bad news for carnivores, another study showed that high intake of dietary fats from red meat and dairy products was associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer.

The results of the study were that men and women who consumed high amounts of total fats had 53% and 23% higher relative rates of pancreatic cancer, respectively, compared with men and women who had the lowest fat consumption.

Participants who consumed high amounts of saturated fats had 36% higher relative rates of pancreatic cancer compared with those who consumed low amounts. One of the scientists involved commented: "We observed positive associations between pancreatic cancer and intakes of total, saturated, and mono-unsaturated fat overall, particularly from red meat and dairy food sources. We did not observe any consistent association with polyunsaturated or fat from plant food sources. Altogether, these results suggest a role for animal fat in pancreatic carcinogenesis."

Over 500,000 people were analysed in the study for an average of 6 years, so these are substantial numbers. However, the editors of the journal in which the study was published noted that there is insufficient epidemiological and laboratory evidence to confirm the importance of animal fats or even that meat is the important factor, as opposed to other dietary or lifestyle preferences associated with meat consumption.

Bread crust and cancer prevention

A new study by Indian scientists suggests that a chemical found in the crust of bread may protect against bowel cancer.

During bread baking a chemical called pronyl-lysine is released - this is an anti-oxidant and it is eight times more abundant in the crust than the rest of the loaf.

Rats were given regular doses of pronyl-lysine and in these cases it appeared to prevent the development of pre-cancerous lesions in the colon by as much as 70% or more.

It should be noted that this study was carried out on rats, not humans, and therefore is not at the same level as the previous two studies. However, the results are interesting and point the way for further research.- Yahoo Lifestyle

Mouth and throat cancer could be caused by the virus that causes genital warts and cervical cancer, and it could be spreading through sex and French-kissing, a study published Wednesday says.

"In addition to the known oral cancer risk factors -- smoking, drinking alcohol and chewing betel nuts -- human papillomavirus (HPV) has been added to the list," the study published in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Emerging Infectious Diseases report says.


HPV has been documented in many cases of oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer, which is on the rise, and the study suggests that the increase in these mouth and throat cancers could be caused by infection with the virus that causes genital warts and cervical cancer.

They also suggest that the rising incidence of oral cancer could be due to changing sexual behaviors.

Oral sex has become more commonplace and people have more sex partners and have sex earlier in life -- all behaviors linked to HPV-related oral cancers, the study said.

Its authors, Torbjorn Ramqvist and Tina Dalianis of the Karolinska Institutet, cited earlier studies and their own research using the Swedish Cancer Registry, in writing up their findings.

"In a recent study... it was shown that the risk of developing oral HPV infection increased with increases in lifetime oral or vaginal sex partners," they said.

"It has also been reported that ... open-mouthed kissing was associated with the development of oral HPV infection," they said, citing the results of a study that looked at 542 US students.

"We suggest that we are encountering a slow epidemic of mainly sexually transmitted HPV-induced" oral cancers, the report said.

Oropharyngeal cancers caused by HPV are the second most common cancer linked to the virus, and their incidence is increasing.

The researchers observed that cases of throat and mouth cancer are rising in Britain, Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United States, especially among young people, and more often among men than women.

The researchers urge the scientists to study the effects of the HPV vaccine available to girls and women on oropharyngeal squamous cell cancers.

If the vaccine is found effective against mouth and throat cancer tumors, health officials should consider expanding the universe of patients vaccinated against HPV infection to include boys and men, they said.
