KUALA LUMPUR: A mental patient used a lighter to start a fire at the mental patient isolation room of the Emergency Department at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) early Friday.
Health director-general Datuk Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman said the cause of the fire at 12.30am was traced after studying footage of closed-circuit television (CCTV) in the room.
“Hospital staff used fire extinguishers to put out the fire and save the mental patient but he died as the fire spread quickly,” he said in a statement here on Saturday.
He said other patients and Emergency Department staff were evacuated until the fire was put out by the Fire and Rescue Department at 12.55am.
Before the fire, the aggressive mental patient was taken by police accompanied by two family members to the Emergency Department at 10.15 pm.
The patient was placed at mental patient isolation room in accordance with the standard operating procedures for aggressive mental patients.
The fire disrupted the department's services for 94 minutes and resumed at 1.20am as it only destroyed the isolation room.
“No other patients or medical staff was injured in the fire. A post-mortem on the body found the cause of death was soot inhalation.”
Dr Hasan said only the mental patient died and not two as reported by some newspapers as the two had died from road accidents.
“The ministry regrets the fire and sympathise with family members of the deceased and will make improvements if investigation finds weaknesses in handling of the case,” he added.- Bernama

KUALA TERENGGANU: Mohd Ashraf Hafiz Abdul Aziz, 25, who failed in his bid to change his name to Aleesha Farhana after undergoing a sex change operation in Thailand, has died at the intensive care unit of Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah.
Bernama reported that he was admitted to the hospital at 3am on Thursday after experiencing heart problems and low blood pressure and died at 5am on Saturday.
His father Abdul Aziz Ahmad, 60, when contacted, said the family was waiting for family members and relatives to return to Kuala Terengganu and that the funeral would be held after the mid-day prayers Saturday.
Doctors at the hospital on Friday said he was suffering from unstable angina with cardiogenic shock.
Mohd Ashraf Hafiz, 25, had applied to the Kuala Terengganu High Court for an order to change his name and gender but it was rejected on July 18.
In Kuala Lumpur, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said that she was deeply saddened that her ministry was not able to provide counselling in time to Mohd Ashraf Hafiz.
Mohd Ashraf Abdul Aziz, 25, who wanted to change his name to Aleesha Farhana and gender after undergoing a sex change operation in Thailand in 2009, died at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu at 5am today after having been admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit on Thursday for heart problems and low blood pressure.
Shahrizat said her ministry from early on had offered to provide counselling to Mohd Ashraf but now fate had intervened.
“We were concerned about his wellbeing. My ministry is welfare-oriented and we are non-judgemental.
“We try to understand and counsel anyone who needs our help, especially people who feel desperate like in the case of Ashraf, but for him, it is too late now,” she said when met on arrival at Putra World Trade Centre here where the Wanita Umno chief was due to chair a meeting of the Umno wing's executive committee.
Shahrizat also extended her condolences to Mohd Ashraf's family and hoped they would remain strong in this difficult time.
“If the family needs any help they can contact me or the nearest Welfare Department office,” she said.
Meanwhile, a candlelight vigil will be held at 8pm Saturday by Seksualiti Merdeka in front of the Bar Council at Lebuh Pasar Besar. - theStarOnline

Office overrun - a large crowd of foreign workers waiting to be registered
at the Immigration Department HQ in Putrajaya.

PETALING JAYA: A commotion broke out at the Immigration Department headquarters in Putrajaya as thousands of foreign workers converged outside the office to register themselves a scene that was repeated in many immigration offices in other states.
As workers dashed for cover to avoid the rain in Putrajaya, some were said to have been trampled.
Shouting ensued while a few were seen to trade blows, but prompt action by Immigration officers who were assisted by some Rela personnel prevented any untoward incident.
As of Wednesday, the Immigration Department had registered 504,007 people from 36,249 employers and the figures were expected to reach 600,000 or more by yesterday.
In JOHOR BARU, state Immigration director Nasri Ishak said the department would turn its attention to registering illegal workers and immigrants after the biometric registration programme of legal foreign workers was completed.
The registration of illegals would be made at the department's Taman Tasek Utara office and not at the headquarters in Taman Setia Tropika, he added.
About 100,000 foreign workers in Johor have registered themselves so far. Long queues were also seen at the headquarters yesterday.
A human resource manager for a manufacturing company in Senai, Alami Mahmood, complained that the long wait of more than a day had caused a production slowdown in his company.
In BUTTERWORTH, several company representatives and their foreign employees crammed into the state Immigration Department in Seberang Jaya in a rush to meet the Sunday deadline.
Some had camped outside the building in Jalan Kelasah as early as 4am to collect registration numbers, which were snapped up within a few hours after officers started giving them out at 8am.
Department director Abdul Qadir Siddiq Ahmad said 66 officers, mainly from the enforcement unit, were handling the registration between 8am and 10pm daily since the exercise started on July 13.
“Until July 27, we registered 36,419 workers out of 97,000 in the state,” he said.
In KOTA KINABALU, there was a low turnout due to rumours that illegal workers might end up being blacklisted.
Immigration Department director Mohammad Mentek dismissed the claims, saying the workers would be allowed to return to Sabah once they obtained proper documents.
Over 34,000 illegal immigrants have registered so far under the 5P (Registration, Amnesty, Monitoring, Enforcement and Repatriation) programme implemented in Sabah since July 18.
He said only those with criminal records, including those who left their employers, would be blacklisted. - myStarOnline
