KUALA LUMPUR: A French lawyer who spoke about the Government's purchase of Scorpene submarines has been arrested and deported by the Immigration Department.
William Bourdon arrived in Malaysia on Thursday.
It is learnt police requested Bourdon's deportation, claiming that he had violated his social visit visa by giving a speech at a dinner in Penang on Thursday night.
Bourdon, a lawyer for Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram), spoke about the deal at the dinner to raise funds for the pending corruption trial in Paris involving the submarine purchase.
He was also scheduled to speak at another fund-raising dinner in Petaling Jaya last night.
Immigration director-general Datuk Alias Ahmad said in a statement last night that Bourdon was detained at the KL International Airport at 11.30am yesterday when he arrived from Penang.
“Investigations by the Immigration Department revealed that Bourdon had violated the terms of his social visit pass as stipulated by the Immigration Act,” said Alias. - theStarOnline
