KUALA LUMPUR: Despite heavy rain, a group of anti-Lynas protesters gathered near the Australian Embassy here Friday afternoon to demonstrate peacefully against the construction of a rare earth refinery plant.

They also handed a memorandum protesting the building of the Lynas plant near Kuantan to a representative of the embassy who assured them that the memorandum would be passed to the Australian government.

The group dispersed at about 3.50pm.

Heavy police and Federal Reserve Unit presence was reported in the Jalan Yap Kwan Seng area where the embassy is located, to ensure there were no untoward incidents.

The protesters, numbering a few hundred, were seen carrying placards and banners.

Kuantan MP Fuziah Sallehand Save Malaysia chairman Vincent Jiamwere among the protesters, while Batu MP Tian Chua and Bukit Lanjan rep Elizabeth Wong arrived later.
