SINGAPORE: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd's (KTMB) historic train service which has been operating from the Tanjung Pagar station here for the last 79 years has ended with a royal send-off.
The train was driven for the last time out of the station by Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar at 11pm last night, carrying more than 500 passengers on its coaches.
Smiles were seen on the faces of the KTMB staff and the hundreds of visitors who crowded the old station.

There was an air of nostalgia somewhat, as they took pictures non-stop and shouted in excitement whenever they heard the horn from the train.
Others sought autographs from KTMB staff. They also crowded the platform to catch a glimpse of the last train.
For taxi driver Zulkifli Md, 30, he felt sad to witness the closing of the Tanjung Pagar station.
“This was the place where many Singaporeans used to come to eat and enjoy the atmosphere.
“Some of my friends even said that when they stepped into the station, it was like they could breathe Malaysian air for a while,” he said, adding that things would not be the same any more.
He said he would miss the eateries and that he would now have to find another place to enjoy his favourite ayam masak merah, a popular dish at one of the stalls at the station.
Another visitor, housewife Surianlins Suryaningsih, 30, said she had never seen so many people at the station before.
“I knew that this would be a historic event and I wanted to be part of the grand send-off.
“From the big crowd today, it is evident that Singaporeans hold this station close to their hearts. I hope the Government will preserve the original building,” she said.
The handing over of the Tanjong Pagar station, built in 1932, follows an agreement made between Singapore and Malaysia last year which includes Singapore taking possession of KTM land here.
In return, Malaysia was offered 60% control of projects developed at prime land parcels around Marina Bay and Ophir Rochor. - theStarOnline

KUALA LUMPUR: A wife insisted on posting bail for her husband in the Sessions court here, although he had been slapped with three counts of raping and molesting their 15-year-old daughter.
The husband, a 38-year-old army staff sergeant, had earlier pleaded not guilty to all three charges.
The prosecution, represented by deputy public prosecutor S. Malini Anne, had not offered bail as she was concerned that the accused might harass his daughter further.
However, the accused, from the dock, asked to be granted bail and said his wife was present to post bail for him.
Dressed in a long black robe and a bright pink headscarve, the wife said “Yes”, when the judge repeatedly asked if she was sure of her decision, as the victim was her own daughter.
“As a wife, I know my husband is problematic,” she told the court.
Judge Emelia Kaswati Mohamad Khalid, however, still did not appear satisfied with her answer and continued to grill her.
Emelia: Can you vouch that he will not harass your daughter? Can you ensure that they will live separately?
Wife: Yes.
Emelia: What if he harasses you, or if he has the key to your home? What if he forces you to open the door for him? Puasa (the fasting month), and Hari Raya are coming soon. I'm sure he'll want to see the family. Can you ensure they (father and daughter) won't meet?
Wife: I am fully responsible for my promise.
On the first charge, the man was accused of raping his daughter in a bedroom of their home in Desa Tun Hussein Onn, here, at about 3am on June 21, this year.
This amounts to an offence under Section 376 of the Penal Code, and if convicted, he can be jailed between eight and 30 years, and sentenced to at least 10 strokes of the rotan.
On the second charge, he was accused of molesting his daughter by inserting his finger into her private parts, at the same time and place. He also faces a third charge of molesting the girl by groping her private parts at about 3am, one night in the middle of last year.
Both charges are offences under Section 354 of the Penal Code, and the man can be jailed up to 10 years, or fined, or whipped, or face any two of such punishments, for each charge.
The court finally granted him bail at RM8,000 with one surety for all three charges, with additional conditions that both father and daughter are separated and not allowed to meet at all.
The court also ordered him to report himself to the police station nearest his home once a month, and fixed Aug 2 for mention. - theStarOnline

In the dock: Mohd Shakri being led to the lockup after he was charged.

KUANTAN: A rubber tapper claimed trial at a Sessions Court here to a charge of hurting his wife by allegedly biting her private parts.
Mohd Shakri Ismail, 28, is charged with causing injury to his wife Roshapida Mat Sidik, 23, while trying to have sex with her at their home at Felda Bukit Goh here between 12am and 3.30am on April 21.
If convicted, he could be jailed up to five years.
Mohd Shakri, who was unrepresented, told Sessions judge Noradidah Ahmad that he never hurt his wife.
Noradidah then asked him why there were bite marks on Roshapida's genitals.
Mohd Shakri did not answer the question and pleaded not guilty.
Noradidah fixed bail at RM7,000 and set July 25 for mention. - theStarOnline

LOS ANGELES: American pop star Lady Gaga is accused of misrepresenting charitable donations from wristbands sold to benefit tsunami and earthquake victims in Japan earlier this year.

The complaint, filed in a Michigan court on Friday by 1800 lawfirm, says the star as well as her record label, Universal Music Group, and the Bravado International Group, lacked transparency surrounding the amount of money that was raised from sales of the wristbands and whether those funds were 100% allocated to earthquake and tsunami victims.

After the earthquake and tsunami disasters in March 2011 that devastated Japan, Lady Gaga created the rubber wristbands and the singer’s website advertised that all proceeds from sales of the wristband would benefit victims.

The white rubber bracelets were sold for 5 and inscribed in red with the phrase, “We pray for Japan,” in English and Japanese.

“While we commend Lady Gaga for her philanthropic efforts, we want to ensure that claims that “all proceeds will be donated to Japan’s earthquake relief efforts” are in fact true,” said one of the plaintiff’s lawyers, Alyson Oliver, in a press release.

The suit alleges that the singer and her partners “added additional “shipping charges” in excess of the amount required to ship the wristbands based on their weight, and retained a portion of the shipping charges,” according to court documents.

“This misguided lawsuit is without merit and unfortunately takes attention away from the kind deeds of the fans around the world who are supporting the people of Japan,” said Lady Gaga’s spokeswoman, Holly Shakoor in an email to AFP.

“The entire 5 donation made with the purchase of each bracelet is going to support the disaster relief. No profit is being made on shipping costs. Sales tax charges were made in accordance with local legal requirements,” she added.

The lawsuit seeks damages, “including a return of all amounts paid for the products,” according to the press release.

According to Japanese media, Lady Gaga has so far donated approximately 3 million to disaster zones in the northeast of Japan, most of that from the sale of the wristbands.

A court in Germany has ruled that a 26-year-old man who murdered two teenagers, chewing on parts of one of them and drinking her blood, will never roam free again.

Jan O. was given a life sentence by the court in Goettingen, central Germany on Monday. He will be sent to a psychiatric unit and will never be released because of the danger he posed to the public.
The defendant had admitted to strangling 14-year-old Nina last November, drinking her blood and chewing bits of flesh from her neck in order, the court found, to "satisfy his sexual desires."
Five days later he strangled 13-year-old Tobias when the boy stumbled across Nina's body in woodland. He initially thought the boy was a girl because of his long hair.
Presiding judge Ralf Guenther said that the alcoholic and drug addict had committed "unimagineable crimes, taking a daughter from her mother and a son from his parents."

A woman in the US has been accused of spraying policemen with her breast milk.
Stephanie Robinette, 30, is facing charges including domestic violence, assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office said the cops were responding to a call about a domestic dispute early Saturday.
A man told them that his wife was drinking at a wedding and hit him before locking herself in a car.
Sheriff Walter L. Davis III described the scene: "When deputies approached the vehicle to speak to Robinette, she began yelling profanities and refused to exit.
"The cops attempted to remove her from the vehicle.
"Then, Robinette advised the deputies that she was a breastfeeding mother and proceeded to remove her right breast from her dress and began spraying the cops and the vehicle with her breast milk.
"After more deputies arrived on scene they were able to remove Robinette from the vehicle and place her under arrest."

81-year-old sex offender Keith Holmes was arrested in Palmdale, Calif., after the mother of a 12-year-old girl said he tried to kidnap her daughter.
Keith Holmes

An 81-year-old sex offender in California just won't learn his lesson.
Convicted child molestor Keith Holmes was busted for trying to lure a preteen girl into his car in Palmdale, Calif., cops said.
A local mom said she saw the liver-spotted perv pull his car up to her 12-year-old daughter at an intersection about 11 a.m. Saturday and ask if she wanted a ride.
After the girl shot him down, Holmes continued to creep alongside her until the girl's mom came over and chased him away, cops said.
Luckily for the family - and neighborhood kids - the dirty old man obeys traffic laws and the mom was able to jot down his license plate when he stopped at a red light, KTLA-TV reported.
Cops tracked him down a short time later and hauled him in on suspicion of kidnapping.
The girl and her mother were not identified.
Local authorities said Holmes was a notorious predator who has been arrested for molesting children twice since December 2009. He was on probation for those arrests.
The Palmdale deputy who cuffed Holmes said his car was filled with shady "items" that would have helped him kidnap a child, but he wasn't specific, KTLA reported.
Holmes was being held on $1 million bail, and he is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday. - NYDailyNews.com

A youth underwent a sex change operation as he believed it would be easier to make money from men.
Zhang Hailong, a Secondary student then, ran away from home in 2007 after an argument with his parents.
He worked at a bar in Suzhou, China, but was unhappy with the low income.
He complained to a friend who suggested that he "transform" himself into a woman as the GROs at the bar made at least 500 yuan (RM236) a day.
Zhang underwent a sex change operation and changed his name to Juan Juan. He returned to work at the bar as the owner, who bore the surgery cost, had promised to rehire him.
But Zhang could never stand the weird looks from the customers and wanted to work at a place where nobody knew his original identity.
Last year, he followed his netpal Wang Laiqing, 27, to work in Nanjing but the income could hardly cover the expenses of two people.
Then Wang wanted Zhang to stage a show to trick and rob businessman Zhao Bin, who had invited the transsexual for sex.
As the two were at the hotel room, Wang – who acted as Zhang's husband - stormed in and assaulted the innocent Zhao Bin while the transsexual pretended to be crying.
Then, Wang demanded a "settlement fee" from Zhao Bin before snatching away his necklace worth over 6,000 yuan (RM2,835) and wallet containing 500 yuan (RM236).
Zhao Bin asked his landlord to send 3,000 yuan (RM1,418) to Wang at Yanchangqiao Square.
But 30 minutes later, Zhang telephoned Zhao Bin, asking him to pay another 1,000 (RM473) to redeem his wallet.
Zhao Bin lodged a report and the police arrested Zhang but Wang escaped.
Zhang, now 21, was sentenced to four years jail and fined 3,000 yuan (RM1,418) for robbery.

The Porsche 968 was developed as an entry-level car to replace the 944, and was produced for just a few years(1992-1995). The year after this went out of production, the Boxster took over as the entry-level Porsche and remains in production to this day.

GEORGE TOWN: Two women were bundled into a car and dumped 10km from where they were abducted at a petrol station in Jalan Masjid Negri here.
Sources said they appeared dazed and could not recall how they ended up in Batu Maung and what had happened to them during the four hours they were held captive after being dragged into the car at about 5am yesterday.
The two, both in the 20s, reported they lost a few hundred ringgit and three handphones to their captors.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the two women had had a few drinks earlier and had stopped at the petrol station to use the toilet.
He said a closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) image showed the women going into the toilet at about 3.30am.
Three men came along some 90 minutes later and dragged the victims out from the toilet, bundled them back into their car and drove off.
Eyewitnesses who saw the incident called the volunteer patrol unit, leading to a search for the women.
A police forensic team was later seen lifting fingerprints and looking for clues from the victims' car at the Jelutong police station.
One of the victims spent about 30 minutes at the station to give her statement.
ACP Gan said the police have classified the case as robbery.- theStarOnline
